Horzum, M. (2011). Developing Transactional Distance Scale and Examining Transactional Distance Perception of Blended Learning Students in Terms of Different Variables. Educational Sciences: Theory And Practice, 11(3), 1582-1587.
This article summarizes a study that was conducted to develop a scale to measure transactional distance (TD) and using different variables, to determine whether there was any difference in the perception of TD in blended learning. Dr. Horzum, PhD, is currently an Assistant Professor at the Computer and Instructional Technology Department at Sakarya University. His area of research includes distance education, transactional distance and learning object. The article is found in a peer-reviewed journal and includes an extensive reference list with some peer-reviewed journals and some unpublished dissertations. TD is described here as the communication and psychological space between learner and instructor that could potentially lead to misunderstandings. Literature revealed that studies using scales to measure TD perception qualitatively are generally limited. The study was conducted with 197 blended learning students using a general survey design and a Likert type scale. The scales used in this study were interactive television, video conferencing and the internet. The variables measured were gender, usefulness or lack thereof of blended learning, the most utilized component system and the number of daily internet login. The author objectively recorded the results which found no significant differences of TD in blended learning.
